In the midterm project – “Human Machine Machine Human”, we wonder what’s the differences between human and machine. In a general way, the role of man and machine was relatively clear: human input something -> black box -> machine output something, such as we control the washing machine/toaster/teakettle and so on. We always consider how do we control machine. But how does something control us ?

Nowadays, with the development of artificial intelligence, Human beings always want to give the machine some human nature and think this will be better serve the human. That is true that the emotional machine can better understand the human instruction. But we ignore the evil in human nature. What happens if the machine inherits the evil in human nature?

We are controlled by the social rules (even laws) which formulated by people (government/company) and for the overall social efficiency or benefits. Such as the worker played by Charles Chaplin in Modern Times, and today human being still under the control of Google map, Uber and the Foodora.
We are controlled by the nature rules which are based on Human biological attributes. Such as: Energy conservation law too much work->get tired-> relax and get some energy (eat).

To test our idea, we kept making different mechanical prototypes. With these different prototypes, we could better understand the expressions of the machine and how people understand/misunderstand them.

During the hands on process, we were getting closer to the core of our idea. It was not as simple as we thought at first. We found out that in the interaction between human and machine, we could hardly tell who is controlled by whom, vice versa. We were struggling about how to design the interaction not merely for fun. We, therefore, design the way to control the mirror. We collected the evaluation of beauty from the plastic surgery clinic and designed a scale to tell the person how to differ the beauties in front of the mirror. And then the person told the other one who had the controller to press the button. The process meant that we, normal people, were unknowingly controlled by the social rules(scale) and at the same time our reactions were also effective for the others(controller holder) who controlled a machine in daily life. The person who stood in front of the mirror was also controlled by the machine. It was kind of controlling chain. Every part of the chain sometimes we consider him/her/it as human and sometimes as a machine.

This form contained every detail how to measure the facial features and skin color. We designed the scale with an algorithmic expression to tell the social rules are kind of algorithm.
